Managing the Board - CEO Relationship
October 22, 2019
Participant Board-Related Challenges:
Evolving board membership for greater contributions - strategic and/or fundraising.
Board chair and members getting too involved in execution.
Bringing the best practice of diversity that mirrors the communities we serve.
Helping the board help us prioritize.
How to educate the board to help us establish and reinvigorate vision, strategy and priorities.
Best Practices Emerging from Discussion:
Establish crystal clear mutual expectations on Board and CEO roles - Board should focus on why and CEO should focus on what.
CEO should be the central figure for driving governance and managing mutual accountability.
Sync board rhythm with organizational rhythm and move from ‘report outs’ to ‘engagement.’
Periodically engage each board member individually to calibrate expectations.
Implement a structured on boarding process so that board members are clear on expectations.
Consider establishing specific fund raising goals as a criteria for membership.
